The Jury 2009
Ute Freund, Sophie Maintigneux, Bella Halben

The task of a director of photography is simple: to record what is happening in front of the camera. The process itself is highly complex, though. Artistic visual ideas must be technically realised. In no other field of film production do the tools of the trade change as rapidly as they do in the recording of moving pictures: film and video equipment is available in countless variations, new and improved technologies in film and digital cameras appear on the market in shorter and shorter intervals.

With this prize the International Women’s Film Festival Dortmund | Cologne continues the sponsoring of next generation women directors of photography in Germany that was initiated by the Festival in Dortmund in 2001. The € 5.000 prize will call the industry’s attention to new talents and intends to encourage young women behind the camera in their choice of profession.

With the kind support of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the Fachhochschule Dortmund.

The National Competition for Women Directors of Photography has so far only been tendered for cross-gender topics.
2009 will be the first time to issue the Dortmund Prize for women directors of photography, endowed with 2.500 Euros in the category of documentary films.
