Performing Bodies: Feminist Avant-garde

Art Must Be Beautiful,Artist Must Be Beautiful
DK 1975, 14', Director: Marina Abramovic

Avant-garde films of the 1960s & 1970s and the 1980s & 1990s
From the 1960s onwards, women performance artists asserted a claim to their bodies in a series of actions where they were prepared to risk physical injury to themselves or mental hurt.

Performance of the Bodies presents experimental videos from pioneering artists such as Marina Abramović. Lisa Steele, Chantal Akerman, Yoko Ono and Valie Export. The latter is renowned for her legendary Tap and Touch Cinema (1968) in which she stuck a cardboard box over her breasts and let passers-by "have a grope".

To complement this section, we will also be showing a selection of experimental films from the 1980s and 1990s which, in a relook at taboos centering on the public perception of the female body, aim to undermine the ideals of female beauty.
